Success at SkillsUSA Missouri! Walls repeats and a big win for the Chapter Business Team!

Chapter Business Team
Chapter Business Team will represent Missouri in the National SkillsUSA Championships
North Technical High School entered its first Chapter Business Team, a group a six students conducting a mock business meeting following parliamentary procedure, into the SkillsUSA Missouri contests last year. The team's first attempt did not yield any medals, but the members did walk away with valuable experience and knowledge of the level of commitment and training necessary for future success in the contest. Three of those team members returned to the contest this year with a new advisor; North Technical Automotive Technology Instructor Dave Raymond. Mr. Raymond has been coaching his daughter's FFA Chapter Business team for years. With his guidance and the experience and determination of the Business team members, Zana Barnes, Keyla Brown, Kourtney Harvey, Danielle McDade & Lorraine Tippett, this year the team returned from the SkillsUSA Competitions at Linn State Technical College victorious. The team received gold medals, a 1st place trophy, and tickets to the National Championships held in Kansas City June 23rd-27th.

Royce Walls
Royce Wall's 1st place win gives him a second chance at becoming National Champion in CNC Turning.
Expectations were high this year for Royce Walls. Royce is a North Technical High School senior in the Precision Machining program. As a junior in last year's SkillsUSA contest, Royce returned with a gold medal in CNC Turning Technology earning him a spot in the National contest. Royce placed 9th in the nation in CNC Turning last year with tough competition from fellow student-contestants. Royce viewed his experience in Kansas City as a step toward perfecting his skill and vowed to return to Tech, brush up on his programming, and revisit Kansas City to win the honor of National Champion. True to his vow, Royce prevailed last weekend with yet another gold medal at the Missouri State Competition giving him the chance to do just that.

Paul Kelley
Precision Machining 3rd place winner Paul Kelley
Continued student success; Paul Kelley, also a senior in the Precision Machining Shop, took 3rd place in CNC Machining –Milling. This is his second year being awarded a medal at the State contest, demonstrating he is a confidant and steady leader in his field of study. Kacie-Lynn Ewing and Sam Delia from the Law Enforcement/Homeland Security shop respectively prevailed with 2nd and 3rd place medals in the Criminal Justice contest. The EMT/Firefighting shop was represented by Josh Bohlmann who received a silver medal for his 2nd place win in Firefighting.

Students scoring an 80% or higher in the District Technical Information Tests also attend the State Contests to challenge their peer's intellectual knowledge of their skill area. The Missouri Technical Information medal winners from North Tech were:
  • Darius Clark-Wallace, 1st Computer Networking
  • Deira Martin, 2nd Cosmetology
  • Arnetha Dent, 3rd Cosmetology
  • Stepheon Kaiser, 1st Sheet Metal

Kacie-Lynn Ewing
Criminal Justice 2nd place winner Kacie-Lynn Ewing
North Technical High School took fifty students to Linn State College for the 2012 SkillsUSA Missouri Championships. Overall, the contingent acquired a grand total of 14 medals in the state event. While not all contestants walked away with medals, it is important to remember, as stated by the National SkillsUSA's officer, "a true champion will stay motivated, practice, and grow in their skill."

Congratulations to all the SkillsUSA participants and winners. A Special thanks to director Dave Raymond and advisor Claudia Boyd and to all the event chaperones. We applaud your selfless dedication and commitment to student success.
