TEAM Mentoring

North Technical High School encourages programs and services that encourages Student Performance, Achievement, Leadership, and Involvement.

TEAM: Tremendous Effort Among Men

TEAM is a mentoring program for African-American young men attending North Technical High School. The focus of the program is to help our young men develop a standard of excellence in:

  1. Student Achievement
  2. Professionalism
  3. Leadership
  4. Community Involvement

The program is two-fold. There will be weekly group meetings covering various topics conducted by mentors and various productive, successful men from the community. In addition, several male staff members will personally mentor at least two young men. Mentors will meet with the young men on a weekly basis. As a member of the program, the young men are expected to:

  • Attend all meetings
  • Refrain from wearing sagging pants
  • Refrain from using profane language
  • Wear a shirt and tie one day a week
  • Engage in community service projects
  • Engage in book studies

Each month will have a theme. For instance, but not limited to: Study Skills, Professionalism, Health and Wellness, Leadership and Entrepreneurship.

The Learning Center

In an effort to improve math and reading skills, all 10th grade students are given the STAR Assessment test at the beginning of the year to determine their reading and math levels.  STAR helps schools measure individual and class growth, as well as reliably forecast results on standardized tests.  Students are then accordingly placed in PassKey, a computer-based self-paced learning system designed to help a wide range of students gain proficiency in Reading, and Math. PassKey contains hundreds of Web-based lessons spanning six skill levels and ranging from grades 1.6 to college entry, thus challenging beginning to advanced learners. Students who improve by a grade level or more when they retake the STAR Assessment test in the spring of the school year are posted on the “wall of fame” and celebrate their accomplishments with a pizza party.
