Golden Eagles Soccer Team Dominates Cahokia
Before the summer soccer season began, Coach Pat Hanneken was genuinely excited about his new 2010 North Techical Golden Eagles Boys Soccer team. After a dominating opening victory over Cahokia last Thursday (9/2), it is easy to see why. The Golden Eagles shut down the Cahokia Comanches with tremendous defence, keeping them scoreless for two complete halves. Meanwhile, the visiting Golden Eagles controlled the ball, made good passes, and maintained excellent communication. The Eagles took a total of 19 shots at Cahokia’s net which resulted in 7 total points; 4 goals came in the first half and 3 goals were scored in the second. Eddie Schuler was North Tech’s leading scorer and MVP with 4 goals and 1 assist. John Lee had 2 goals with 3 assists, while Donovan Hemsath added a goal. Coach Hanneken points out that although this year’s team represents a mixture of different personalities, they are coming together very well. He is impressed with his players’ level of determination and discipline on and off the field. Hanneken feels that his team has a good chance to go far into the season and surprise other district competitors. The Golden Eagles will be closely watching some of the stronger teams on their schedule including Lutheran North, Metro, and Crossroads College Prep. The Golden Eagles next take on Hazelwood East (September 8th at Hazelwood East) and Ritenour (September 10th at Ritenour). Come out and cheer for your Golden Eagles soccer team.
Attending the 2010 MSHSAA Sportsmanship Summit
By Rich Kantner Augist 16, 2010 The 2010 Sportsmanship Summit was held at the St. Charles Convention Center on Saturday, August 14. North Tech participants were Athletic Director, Rich Kantner, Senior Architecture student, Rodney Marable (Basketball), and Senior Cisco Network Administration student, Brittany McNutt (Volleyball, Basketball and Soccer). The summit was opened with a keynote speech from Cameron Mills, a 1998 graduate from the University of Kentucky. His two clutch three pointers against Utah in the 1998 National Championship game sealed the victory. He still holds the record for highest season and career three-point shooting for UK. Today he travels the country speaking on how to become a true leader and champion through positive action and how to maximize opportunities to show leadership. After the opening speech, participants were able to attend three, 45 minute, breakout sessions on topics such as; Steroid Education, Nutrition, Character Development, Sportsmanship and the Role of Spirit Groups in Sportsmanship. After lunch, the second keynote speaker, Michelle Smith addressed the audience. In 1996 and 2000 Michelle helped the United States Women’s Softball team win two gold medals. She played a dual role in the tournament as a pitcher and designated hitter. In 1993 Michelle began her professional softball career within the Japanese Pro League. She was named Pitcher of the year 7 times. At the summit, Michelle told stories of perseverance, hard work and dedication to sports and country. The MSHSSA (Missouri State High School Sports and Association) governs sports and activities in the state of Missouri. North Tech participates in Boys and Girls Volleyball, Boys and Girls Basketball, Cheerleading, Boys and Girls Soccer and Boys and Girls Track.

The Fashion Design Program Has Come of Age
For the past two years Fashion Design has been the “newest kid on the block” at North Technical High school. The program was started in August of 2008, with a fresh set of over twenty juniors scheduled to graduate in 2010. Newly hired Fashion Design program instructor Ms. Andee Champion was given the task of developing this fledgling program into a mature curriculum that would be a permanent part of North Technical’s offerings for years to come. Ms. Champion graduated from Stephens College located in Columbia, MO with a degree in Fashion. She honed her clothing design experience working at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis and the Repertory Theater of St. Louis, making outfits for stage performers. Today you will find Ms. Champion helping students develop their fashion design skills in their newly outfitted 2010 classroom facility. The tremendous success of the first ever North Technical fashion show in April, and the graduation of the original Fashion Design class of 2010 in May, has clearly demonstrated that the program has come to maturity. Recent graduates of the program have been accepted to fashion programs in schools like Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Stephens College in Columbia, Clark Atlanta University in Georgia, and the Chicago Arts Institute in Illinois. As Fashion Design starts its third year at North Technical High, it will no doubt grow in popularity among current and prospective students in the years to come. The current Fashion Design class is preparing for their fall fashion show. Volunteers who would like to be fashion models are needed for this event. If you are a full-time student (male or female) in good academic standing, and you feel you have the poise to walk down a runway , sometimes in high heels, then sign-up by Wednesday (8/25) in room B-201 for the upcoming auditions. We are looking forward to more creative designs and fashion trends from this new crop of students as they enjoy their new classroom facility.

North Technical Again Meets All 3 AYP Indicators
North Technical has once again excelled in its Adequate Yearly Progress report for 2010, making this the second year in a row that the school has met its AYP indicators. State school districts nationwide are working closely with the U.S. Department of Education to make sure all students achieve academic proficiency. In response to this effort, Missouri’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has measured students’ academic progress in the areas of Communication Arts and Mathematics. In addition to these subject areas, the DESE report also looks at key indicators of school progress such as attendance and graduation rates. Last year in 2009, North Technical met all 3 DESE status indicators, and it looks like the school has done it again! According to the latest 2010 revised report from DESE, North Technical High School has once again successfully fulfilled all indicators of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Among the highlights of the report was a nearly 93% attendance rate and a nearly 97% graduation rate. Both attendance and graduation numbers were slightly improved over last year’s successful 2009 report. Congratulations to all North Technical staff for their hard work throughout these past two years which has lead to these accomplishments.

North Technical Students Travel to London & Paris
It’s not often that North Technical students get the opportunity to travel beyond their U.S. borders to “see the world”. This past summer, a handful of North Technical students, parents, and teachers did exactly that, traveling to the historic and beautiful cities of London, England and Paris, France. The trip was arranged by Education Tours (http://www.eftours.com/), a provider of affordable educational tours to over 40 countries around the world. Mrs. Jeanne Robinson organized the effort to put together the group from North Technical High School. The 9 day tour began in London where students explored some of England’s most well known tourist sites including Grosvenor Square, the House of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, London Bridge, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Windsor Castle. A quick day trip to Canterbury and Dover led to other attractions including historic Canterbury, the Canterbury Cathedral, the majestic white Cliffs of Dover, and Dover Castle. On the second half of the complete tour the NorthTech group crossed the famous English Channel via ferry to Calais, France. From Calais, they were transported to what is often called the “city of lights and romance” Paris, France. Here they passed through many points of interest while the tour guide gave insightful looks into many of France’s historic figures including King Henry, King Edward, King Louis, and Napoleon Bonaparte. Of course no tour of Paris would be complete without a visit to the Notre Dame Cathedral and a photo shoot near the centerpiece of the 1889 World’s Fair, the Eiffel Tower.
Although they were in Europe, students were surprised and even happy to see many well recognized American icons like MacDonald’s, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Coca Cola. If European cuisine was not to their liking, an occasional American burger made in France was just fine. In all the 2010 European experience was a great success, and some of North Counties own residents, young and old alike, will have a lot to talk about and remember for years to come. Next summer’s educational tour will be a 10-day trip (June 14-23) through the cities of Paris, Florence, and Venice. If you are a North Technical student, teacher, or parent interested in next summer’s 2011 education tour, please contact Mrs. J. Robinson in room C-125 or call 314-989-7651. The current price for next summer’s trip is $2,495. A $95.00 enrollment fee will secure this price. Prices for this 2011 tour will go up on August 31, 2010, so please don’t wait. .. aSee a slideshow of the London to Paris 2010 European trip.
