The NorthTech Quiz Bowl Team Does it Again!
The NorthTech Quiz Bowl team did it again! After winning an earlier SkillsUSA Quiz Bowl Tournament in December of 2008, the NorthTech Quiz Bowl team repeated the feat in February by winning 1st place in the District SkillsUSA competition. This will advance the NorthTech team to the State SkillsUSA Quiz Bowl competition which will be held in early April. According to the SkillsUSA (2009) contest description “the Quiz Bowl tests a team of 5 competitors' ability to quickly respond to questions covering the areas of academic knowledge, professional development and current events. The participants respond to a question by activating a buzzer system. The teams receive one point for a correct answer and lose a point for each incorrect answer. The active rounds (preliminary and finals) are 100 questions each.” Tavia Henderson, one of the team members, attributes the success of their quiz bowl team to hard work, hours of study, teamwork, and assistance from coach Bierman. When they compete again in the April State SkillsUSA competition, they will need to employ this winning formula once more.
Graphic Design Receives Powerful iMac Systems
The North Technical Graphic Design Program recently received about twenty new Apple iMac Systems powered by the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Precision Machining Gets Modern CNC Equipment
In the North Technical Precision Machining Shop you will commonly see tiny shards of metal pieces falling as machining equipment cuts, shapes, and manipulates blocks of metal using vertical and horizontal mills, lathes, power saws, and grinders. Recently, this North Technical shop received two key equipment upgrades for its Precision Machining program. The modern TM-1 Toolroom Mill and TL-1 Lathe from Haas Automation, Inc. are welcome additions to the North Technical shop. These high-performance computer numerical control (CNC) machining systems have an intuitive programming system that makes setup and operation of the TM-1 and TL-1 fairly easy. Compared to the manual systems, the automated programmable operation of these CNC tools will greatly boost the output production for students learning how to be a skilled machinist. Students will also utilize computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software to design parts that can be produced by the mill and lathe machines. Precision metal manufacturing is used by manufacturers of everything from motorcycle, car and airplane parts, to household appliances, sporting goods and medical equipment. The upgrade to the M-1 Toolroom Mill and TL-1 Lathe will help meet the training needs for students of our Precision Machining program now and long into the future. aClick here to see pictures of the TM-1 Toolroom Mill and TL-1 Lathe. aClick here to see the Precision Machning program (and the TM-1) in action. .
NorthTech Teachers Attend the Inauguration in D.C.
Few people can ever say that they have been an eyewitness to a significant historical event such as a presidential inauguration. Yet present in the January 20th Washington D.C. inaugural crowd of close to two million onlookers were Mr. Weber and Mr. Young, as the nation witnessed President-elect Barack Obama take the oath of office to become the nations 44th President of the United States. The National Mall was definitely overflowing with one of the largest crowds to ever witness a presidential inauguration ceremony. Mr. Weber says they witnessed the historical event from the foot of the Washington Monument. In the days before and after the swearing-in event, the two North Technical teachers also found some time to do a little sight seeing of memorials, monuments, and other points of interest around the D.C. area. aClick here to see pictures taken at the inauguration and around D.C.
Vet Clinic Partners with the Animal Protective Agency
Each week the Veterinary Clinic program at North Technical High School receives an animal from the Animal Protective Association (APA) of Missouri. The APA of Missouri is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing people and pets together and creating programs beneficial to the human/animal bond (APA of Missouri, 2009). Animals received from the APA enable students to gain precious hands-on experience with a variety of different animals. This partnership has been an important part of the Veterinary Assistant program, allowing students the opportunity to practice their veterinary assistant skills. In return, the animal is later given back to the APA having been groomed, bathed, examined, and treated by students practicing to become Vet Assistants and Technicians. The APA will regularly put these animals up for adoption in the hopes of placing the animal in a caring home. According to the APA of Missouri (2009) “careful placement of a pet reduces neglect, mistreatment or future return to a shelter. The APA adoption staff is carefully trained to bring caring individuals and families together with the right animals for their circumstances.” aClick here to see other adoptable APA pets like "Bronco".
Representatives from Ameren Visit North Technical
A Team of representatives from the Ameren utility company paid a recent visit to North Technical High School. Ameren has been supplying Missouri with safe, reliable, and efficient energy from its coal burning power plants for years. The abundance of coal in the U.S. combined with its low cost has made it a dominant fuel for producing electricity. Coal burning plants typically generate over half of the electricity in the United States. The visiting Ameren representatives were from different facets of the companies overall coal power plant operations. They discussed the range of opportunities that exist with the utility company including positions as technicians, analysts, engineers, supervisors, operators, and mechanics. .
