Student Spotlight: Xavier (Financial Services)
Senior Wins Jobs for Missouri Graduates District and State "Employability Skills" Contest. . Xavier is a senior enrolled in the Financial Services Vocational Program and a first semester Jobs for Missouri Graduates (JMG) student. JMG is a pilot project that is funded by the Missouri Division of Workforce Development and is affiliated with the national organization of Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG). On March 6, Xavier showcased his job attainment skills in the JMG district and state Employability Skills competition held in Springfield, MO. He was judged on his resume, cover letter, completed application, and interview. After the contest he had no doubt in his mind that he had done well enough to win the competition, and win he did. Xavier secured first place at both the district and state level contests, thus adding just another accomplishment to what was obviously his already impressive resume and interview skills. The ultimate goal of JMG is to help today’s youth secure a quality job that will lead to a good career, either directly after high school or after post secondary education (Alternative Opportunities Inc., 2006). If this contest is any indication, Xavier already has a good head start on his future career endeavors. .

The NorthTech Quiz Bowl Team Does it Again!
The NorthTech Quiz Bowl team did it again! After winning an earlier SkillsUSA Quiz Bowl Tournament in December of 2008, the NorthTech Quiz Bowl team repeated the feat in February by winning 1st place in the District SkillsUSA competition. This will advance the NorthTech team to the State SkillsUSA Quiz Bowl competition which will be held in early April. According to the SkillsUSA (2009) contest description “the Quiz Bowl tests a team of 5 competitors' ability to quickly respond to questions covering the areas of academic knowledge, professional development and current events. The participants respond to a question by activating a buzzer system. The teams receive one point for a correct answer and lose a point for each incorrect answer. The active rounds (preliminary and finals) are 100 questions each.” Tavia Henderson, one of the team members, attributes the success of their quiz bowl team to hard work, hours of study, teamwork, and assistance from coach Bierman. When they compete again in the April State SkillsUSA competition, they will need to employ this winning formula once more.

Precision Machining Gets Modern CNC Equipment
In the North Technical Precision Machining Shop you will commonly see tiny shards of metal pieces falling as machining equipment cuts, shapes, and manipulates blocks of metal using vertical and horizontal mills, lathes, power saws, and grinders. Recently, this North Technical shop received two key equipment upgrades for its Precision Machining program. The modern TM-1 Toolroom Mill and TL-1 Lathe from Haas Automation, Inc. are welcome additions to the North Technical shop. These high-performance computer numerical control (CNC) machining systems have an intuitive programming system that makes setup and operation of the TM-1 and TL-1 fairly easy. Compared to the manual systems, the automated programmable operation of these CNC tools will greatly boost the output production for students learning how to be a skilled machinist. Students will also utilize computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software to design parts that can be produced by the mill and lathe machines. Precision metal manufacturing is used by manufacturers of everything from motorcycle, car and airplane parts, to household appliances, sporting goods and medical equipment. The upgrade to the M-1 Toolroom Mill and TL-1 Lathe will help meet the training needs for students of our Precision Machining program now and long into the future. aClick here to see pictures of the TM-1 Toolroom Mill and TL-1 Lathe. aClick here to see the Precision Machning program (and the TM-1) in action. .
