Network Administration Students Working for You

Computer Help Desk 02.png
For several months, North Technical High School’s Network Administration: Cisco Academy program has been operating a computer Community Help Desk service.  This free community service takes delivery of poorly functioning and broken down computer systems from the general public and attempts to get them back into good working condition.  Cisco Networking Academy Instructor Jim Elkins, an Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award recipient, used last year’s Emerson Gold Star grant money to jump start this computer help desk program which has proven to be very valuable to both students and the surrounding community.  The help desk program has given North Technical’s Network Administration students real-world experience in computer troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and customer service.  Such valuable hands-on experience will assist these students in breaking into the Information Technology entry-level work force or continuing their college education.  The community, mostly Florissant residents, serviced by this program has also appreciated the service provided by these students during this difficult economy.  Of course, not all of the computers that come in through this program can be fixed, but the latest numbers show approximately 160 computer systems were received of which about 150 were fixed and repaired.  These stats demonstrate the popularity and success of this program, as well as the talent and skill level of the North Technical students involved.

The North Technical High School Network Administration: Cisco Academy program is a college level course for honors credit.  Here students build and repair computers and printers, troubleshoot hardware and software, and learn internet technology and connectivity skills essential for networking and operating in a global economy.  Students also have the opportunity to earn valuable industry recognized information technology certifications like CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCENT, and Cisco CCNA. Instructor Jim Elkins has been the Network Administration program instructor at North Tech for about 11 years.

Duvall Featured in January Diesel Power Magazine

DuvallBenn.png

In 2007, Benn Duvall bought a beautiful brand new ‘07 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel truck.  This Dodge truck has often been seen on the campus of North Technical High School, where Duvall is a Diesel Technology instructor.  Benn’s Diesel Technology students have worked with the vehicle numerous times, gaining valuable experience on a truck that sees more action than most diesel vehicles.  You see Benn Duvall is not your average diesel truck owner.  According to the January 2010 issue of DieselPower Magazine, Duvall has broken “three 1150 AAM rear axles, destroyed three G56 transmissions, and burned up three 5.9L engines”.  How could one possibly abuse such a handsome brand-new diesel vehicle?  It is called “Truck and Tractor pulling”, and it is Duvall’s passion, which is why you can find him and his high powered Dodge Ram in the pages of this month’s DieselPower Magazine!
In the summer of 2009, this North Technical Diesel Program instructor and his Dodge made a trip up to La Porte, Indiana and competed in the 2009 Truck and Tractor Pull National Competition.  Truck and Tractor pulling is a contest that involves pulling a heavy sled along a track with a large high powered vehicle.  A typical pull is about 300 feet, and results in a great deal of noise, smoke, and kicked-up dirt.  Duvall and his powerful truck took the win in the 2.6 class and stole the show the day before during the exhibition pull.  He later competed in the 3rd Annual 4-Wheel Jamboree held in Springfield, Illinois where he won for a second time and had the only full pull in the 2.6 class at just over 300 feet.  Benn’s Dodge has consistently outperformed numerous other trucks on the
National Association of Diesel Motorsports (NADM) circuit.  His three first place truck and tractor wins throughout the year no doubt impressed the writers and editors of DieselPower Magazine, prompting a detailed full-length story about him and his ’07 Dodge Ram truck in the January 2010 issue, complete with detailed photos of the extreme modifications made to his vehicle.  Congratulations to Ben Duvall and his awesome powered ’07 Dodge Ram!

Eagle Cheerleaders Enter the 2010 Athletic Season

Cheerleaders.png
As the North Technical basketball season pushes into the 2010 athletic year, they will be supported from the sidelines by the new and exciting blue and gold eagle cheerleading squad.  Armed with a collection of cheers, moves, and dances meant to involve the crowd and inspire the home team, the eagle cheerleaders will be an awesome source of school spirit and support, possibly making a difference in the morale, confidence, and sportsmanship of the ball game. Cheerleaders look to significantly change the outcome of the game as they get the crowd enthusiastically involved and the team pumped up so that they improve the way they play!  Squad coach Claudia Boyd along with Ms. Annette Wodicker will fine tune the girls’ skill level, teamwork, and self-confidence so that they can become the most effective cheering force for North Technical High school throughout the athletic year.  So come out to the games and help the 2010 cheering squad encourage our teams to victory.

NorthTech Girls Basketball Off to a Strong 7-2 Start

NorthTech's Yelena Rosado is named to the All-Tournament team.

North Tech girls basketball coach George Merritt gathered his team in a circle.  As family and fans slowly spilled out of the Kennedy gym, the coach was beaming from ear to ear.  His players, on the other hand, wore the faces a 62-36 loss in a tournament championship game.  But that didn't matter to Merritt.  He instructed the girls to lift those chins and look right at him.  His big grin was brought about from what the team accomplished in its first season at the Kennedy Christmas Tournament.  He was happy his squad got to the title game and not what happened in it.   He told the players that there was no shame in losing to Eureka.  The Wildcats are an undefeated Class 5 school. Merritt's Golden Eagles are Class 3.
Yelena Rosado.png          "We loved it. It was a great job," Merritt said. "We didn't give our all, but we gave a lot.  "At this point, we just weren't ready.  But we're going to take it and build off of it.  This is probably the best team that we'll see this year.  It's the best that we've seen so far."  North Tech is off to a 7-2 start with its only losses being to Eureka and Willard.   The Golden Eagles get back after it at 7 p.m. Thursday at Barat Academy. They will then face Riverview Gardens, a team they handled 53-42 in the Kennedy Christmas semifinal, on Monday.
The Golden Eagles are mostly juniors and oftentimes get way ahead of themselves.  They are trying to learn the always valuable lesson in basketball of playing fast but also playing patient.  "We rush a lot. Our goal is to force 25 turnovers a game, but we're giving 20," Merritt said. "Once we put that together, and that just takes time and games, we will really have something."  No matter what the Golden Eagles did against the Wildcats, it didn't work.  "I would have liked to have cut the margin a little bit but we just weren't able to," Merritt said. "At the time, we weren't as disciplined as we should have been."

NorthTech Continues Impressive Student Attendance

Attendance 2009-2010a.png

Everyone agrees that student attendance is directly related to student achievement in the classroom. Students who do not attend school regularly tend to achieve at a lower level than their peers and are less prepared to join the work force or move on to institutions of higher education.  At North Technical High School regular school attendance is a priority.  We believe consistent attendance helps students become dependable and responsible young adults.  It is the goal at North Technical to keep overall student attendance at or above 93% and to minimize poor attendance habits.  Throughout the first half of the 2009-2010 school year, North Technical has maintained its lofty attendance goal, averaging 93.54% from the months of August through December of 2009.  This average is slightly improved over the same time period last year where the average attendance was 93.18% through December.  Factors such as attendance helped North Tech meet Missouri’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s (DESE) Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) indicators in the latest 2009 revised report.  Congratulations to all North Technical staff for their hard work throughout the first half of the year which lead to such impressive stats.
