“Casting for Cancer” Trivia and Silent Auction Night
North Technical High School Health Sciences senior Danielle Crow is a familiar figure on the tech campus, and for good reason. For the past three years Danielle has been spearheading fundraising events that help kids with cancer at the Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. SSM Cardinal Glennon cares for children of all ages from Missouri, Illinois and around the world, providing free statewide service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Danielle’s first event of the fundraising year will begin this month with a “Casting for Cancer” Trivia & Silent Auction Night. This will take place at the Florissant JFK Community Center on April 17 at 6:30 pm. The Trivia & Silent Auction night will include a 50/50 drawing, mulligans, raffles, and baskets for all ages. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door for $20 each. Last year’s Trivia & Silent Auction was attended by over a hundred people including friends, family, the community, and a number of North Technical staff members who made up two of the twelve teams which battled for trivia knowledge supremacy. The 2009 event raised approximately $5,000 to help kids with cancer at the Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, and Danielle hopes this year’s event can do even better. Besides the Trivia & Silent Auction, Danielle also organizes a fishing tournament fundraiser at the Lake of the Ozarks during the summer. This year's tournament will be held on May 15. Danielle’s inspiration to help children with cancer came from her experience with a 3 year old cancer patient she met at Cardinal Glennon during a hospital stay nearly three years ago. After her experience, Danielle was determined to find ways in which she can help both young cancer patients and their families financially. The work of this remarkable young teen has not gone unnoticed. She has appeared in the newspapers and on television, promoting this cause she so passionately believes in. North Technical Student Scholarship Recipients
By Davina Reid Northtechnical.org April 5, 2010
North Tech is pleased to salute all of our seniors who have worked so hard to reach their destined goal of graduation. In particular, there are some students who have made achievements not shared by many others. These students have not only been exemplary students academically, but they have set the goal of attending college. Additionally, they have been admitted to the college of their choice and have been offered scholarships to do so. The total scholarships they have been offered are from varying colleges and is summed over four years. The amounts are current and do not include scholarships from private sources; but only include those offered from the colleges/universities. This listing of scholarship recipients will be updated as more students receive awards. Please contact Ms. Davina Reid upon receiving a new scholarship offer. Congratulations to all our scholarship recipients!
Student: Miesha Martin Shop: Financial Services Scholarships Offered: $2,500 College Acceptances: Northwest Missouri State University, University of Central Missouri
What college will you be attending? University of Central Missouri. How were you able to obtain the scholarships you have been offered? I obtained these scholarships as a result of my academic record What words of advice would you give underclassmen who are interested in going to college and/or getting a scholarship offer? Underclassmen should try your best to stay positive on what you’re trying to achieve. Never give up or underestimate yourself. Determination is the key to your success.
Student: Aigner Carr Shop: Plumbing Scholarships Offered: $7,500 College Acceptances: University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) What college will you be attending? University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) How were you able to obtain the scholarships you have been offered? The scholarship I obtained was an automatic scholarship and I received it by making good enough grades to have the required GPA. What words of advice would you give underclassmen who are interested in going to college and/or getting a scholarship offer? I just want to let them know to be on their best behavior starting the first year of high school because in the end, it will affect them. Also, take scholarships seriously and apply for as many as possible because college is very expensive.
Student: DeAndre Ross Shop: Geospatial Technology Scholarships Offered: $8,000 College Acceptances: University of Missouri – Columbia (Mizzou), Missouri University of Science and Technology, University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) What college will you be attending? Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly UM-Rolla) How were you able to obtain the scholarships you have been offered? Even though I only had a 19 on my ACT, I was still able to receive some scholarships through my academics. My GPA and overall great performance in school enabled me to receive scholarships. What words of advice would you give underclassmen who are interested in going to college and/or getting a scholarship offer? Maintain your grades. Make sure to prepare for the ACT as soon as possible. This will increase your chances to get into college and get scholarships. Having a good GPA and class rank plays a huge part in college decisions.
Student: Natoshia Bates Shop: Early Childhood Careers Scholarships Offered: $24,000 College Acceptances: Truman State University What college will you be attending? Fortunately, when you apply to Truman, they give you an automatic scholarship depending on how well you perform in high school and on your ACT. What words of advice would you give underclassmen who are interested in going to college and/or getting a scholarship offer? Don’t take your free education for granted. You are being given the opportunity to make money just by working hard and staying involved in a few school activities. When I asked my uncle if I could get a job, he told me that school was my job. I would tell underclassmen to work hard during their years and try to keep your discipline record clean. Get involved in as much as you can. Plan ahead for scholarships and ask seniors for scholarships they’ve applied for their senior year. Practice for the ACT. It’s an important factor for scholarship reviewers. Lastly, save your money because senior year is expensive and college is also!!!

To anyone interested in college or scholarships, I would advise them to work hard, practice on learning new study habits, and work just as hard as you would any other year – during your senior year. Precision Machining Senior Headed to Nationals
North Technical Precision Machining student Nick Moultrie returned from the State SkillsUSA Competition held at Linn State Technical College with a 1st place medal in the CNC Milling Technology contest. This senior now is setting his sights on even higher achievements as he represents North Technical High school in the National Competition which will be held at Kansas City in June. Precision Machining instructor Brett Smith says “Nick Moutrie is an amazing young man who has a bright future ahead of him. Nick comes in everyday with the desire to learn everything he possibly can, making him one of the top students in class. Through his natural ability and hard work, Nick learned more about programming the CNC mill machine than any other student in class. This knowledge helped catapult him into a first place victory at the Skills USA Missouri State Competition, thus giving Nick the privilege to represent North Technical High school at the SkillsUSA Nationals in Kansas City. Not only is he able to program CNC mills, but he is also very talented at operating manual machines (mills, lathes, and surface grinders) and CNC lathes. Nick has a wonderful attitude and an outstanding personality. Anything is possible in his mind. He gets along with his fellow peers and adults equally, and is a pleasure to have as a student.” Nick says he is planning on attending Ranken Technical College after graduating from North Technical. Whatever his future endeavors are, it looks like this North Technical senior is on track to a successful career.

March Madness Ends Outstanding Eagle Season
The NorthTech Golden Eagle season ends during the "March Madness" basketball playoff quarter finals against Macon.
The North Tech Golden Eagles entered the Class 3 quarter finals riding high on its most successful regular season record (20-5), a Class 3 district basketball championship, and a thrilling come from behind post season win over Bowling Green. The Golden Eagles’ new found success raised enticing questions as to how far George Meritt’s girls would be able to drive into the post-season brackets. The Hannibal High School gymnasium was the location of the high stakes quarter finals game that would pit two schools with similar win-loss records, but which had never met or seen each other play all year. No doubt the importance of this March playoff round became clear to the Eagles as they entered Hannibal gymnasium and saw it packed with the largest crowd they had seen all year. Although the North Tech contingent of fans who drove 170 miles to be at the game was significant, it was clear that the overwhelming number of people filling the Hannibal High gymnasium were cheering for the squad from neighboring Macon county which lies only 60 miles away. Facing a 25 win Macon team in the midst of a sometimes thunderously loud crowd of over 2,000 Macon supporters would no doubt be a challenging test for the girls from North County. After the opening tip-off, the Golden Eagles would lead just once in the very early part of the first quarter. However, once the Macon girls took over that lead, they would never relinquish it to the Golden Eagles again. Macon doubled the scoring output of the Golden Eagles in the first quarter of the game, pouring in 18 points to Tech’s 9. Brittany McNutt did much of the early scoring for North Tech, keeping the Eagles in the game until Macon began pulling away for good. Coach Merritt said that his girls were never able to get into their usual rhythm, as he watched Macon double the scoring output of his girls with a final game score of 59-28. It was a very different outcome for the North Tech girls who only three days previous pulled off an amazing 4th quarter come from behind victory against Bowling Green. Although the season did not end as coach Merritt had hoped, it was nevertheless an amazing season. The leading scorers for North Tech were Brittany Mcnutt (10 points), Angie Randall (8 points), and Brandi Riddle (7points), with Yelena Rosado adding 3. Though the post season came to an abrupt conclusion in Hannibal, coach Merritt is still very proud of his Golden Eagles and their many first time accomplishments during this 2009-2010 basketball season. With his team remaining mostly intact for next year, the expectations will be very high for the 2010-2011 basketball season. Congratulations to the Golden Eagles and coach Merritt on an exciting and outstanding season.
