Service Dogs Visit Veterinary Assistant Program
On Thursday, April 15 the North Technical Veterinary Assistant program was visited by a group of especially talented dogs. Daisy (Border Collie), Babe (English Cocker Spaniel), Heather (Australian Shepherd), Houston (Australian Shepherd), Margo (Samoyed), and their respective owner/trainers are members of the North St. Louis County Obedience Training Club and are registered with Therapy Dogs International. More than just a dog that does some neat tricks, a “therapy dog” is a specially trained support dog with an outstanding temperament towards people and other animals. These dogs can often be found visiting hospitals, care centers, schools, and nursing homes; bringing cheer to all people whether they be young or old. Of course, not every dog can become a “therapy dog”. A therapy support dog must enjoy being around people, be extensively trained, and have solid obedience skills like those outlined in the Canine Good Citizen Test offered by the American Kennel Club (AKC). The Canine Good Citizen Certification test is a skills test for both the handler and dog. Owners must demonstrate that they are conscientious and responsible pet handlers, while dogs must complete a series of assessment tests that demonstrate friendly good manners including; readily accepting strangers, sitting politely and staying in place, walking graciously through pedestrian traffic, responding to handler’ calls, and behaving well around other dogs. On this day, the visiting dogs demonstrated their talents to the North Technical Veterinary Assistant students by performing common Canine Good Citizen training routines that are required of therapy support dogs. In the short video clip above you will see Babe, an English Cocker Spaniel, and Houston an Australian Shepherd that holds 28 canine titles, demonstrate some of the more advanced AKC Canine Good Citizen exercises for North Technical students.
NorthTech's White Takes Aim at State Track Records
By Mike Elder Suburban Journals April 13, 2010
NorthTech Golden Eagle sprinter is now a known quantity after an outstanding junior year.
It's a shame Marquis White didn't start running when he was a youngster. If he had, the North Tech senior perhaps could have ended up being the male version of McCluer South-Berkeley grad Alishea Usery, the best sprinter the state has produced. And even though he has only been sprinting for four years - he started as a freshman at Riverview Gardens and then transferred after one year to North Tech - White might end up with that distinction anyway. "I'm trying to," said White. "I come out and try and do my best every time I get on the track and try to represent my school." White is representing quite well, thank you very much. He was the main reason the Golden Eagles finished eighth as a team at state last spring in Class 3 when he won the 100 meters (10.48), the 200 (21.62) and anchored the second-place 4x100 relay. Not bad for his first trip to the state meet. "It was my first full season so I kind of was (surprised)," White said. "I was just coming off an injury of my groin." White is healthy again this season and he's picked up right where he left off last year. Thanks to running summer track for the St. Louis Blues as well as some indoor action during the winter, White came into the season ready to roll and he hasn't disappointed. He has run times similar to his best last year including in the 100 (10.64) and 200 (22.2) and he's picked up the 400 and has posted an exceptional 50.2 clocking in that. "He's looking really good," said North Tech coach Rich Sanders of White, who is the fastest sprinter in the North County area right now. "We've got a schedule for him to break those times by next week. We don't want to push him too fast." "I'm running good because of the training of the coaches that's all," said White. "And I'm coming off of a good summer season." White's extraordinary success at state last year has him expecting more this year. In addition to wanting to win all three of the sprint events as well as the 4x200 relay, he wants to break some records. Since he nearly broke the Class 3 record in the 100 last year - his 10.67 in the prelims was just shy of the 10.66 record time - he's going to shoot for the overall record of 10.42 held by Raytown South's Maurice Mitchell. He's also confident he can get the Class 3 record of 21.32 in the 200. "I'm hoping," said White. "I came close to breaking (the Class 3 record in the 100) last year. I'm coming back for it this year." Sanders has been quite impressed with how White has picked up the 400 so well. He thinks he could potentially win that event at state and possibly break a record, too. "I really think he has the capability to run a 47," Sanders said. "I think he's got that speed. I don't know if it's good to put that out there but that's what I think he can do." The Golden Eagles' fourth year coach pinpointed a couple reasons why White is so good. "It's the way he's built and he stays on his toes and runs on his toes," he said. "And he knows how to excellerate and hold his speed. He doesn't drop off at the end of a race." White and classmate Stevie Loman will return to the 4x200 squad that also has a lot of potential. Junior Sheron Thomas and either Thadeus Pinkins or Antwann Wright will fill out that squad which could also bring home first at state. "It's shaping up great," said White of the relay squad. "There are some new faces on the team. We're trying to get ready for districts." The way Sanders has it figured, if White can win three open events and lead the relay to a first-place finish that could put the Golden Eagles in contention for a state title. "Forty five or forty six points won it last year," he said. "That's why we're really concentrating on trying to get some other points. I'm trying to bring the other guys along to try to get points in other areas." And he's got White aiming at records to keep him motivated. "I had to get something for him to focus on," said Sanders. "I got him to set goals because he was actually winning races too easily." White said he will attend Barton Community College in Kansas, which has one of the top junior college track programs in the nation, next year. He's going there even though he was offered a full ride by Nebraska. He wants to solidify his academic standing before going to Nebraska and he knows it's a fabulous track program. "I think it's already a good team," he said of Barton. "I think I'll go and help them repeat for a national championship." Sanders hope he leaves North Tech after leading the Golden Eagles to a state title. .
Designs Hit the Runway of the 2010 Fashion Show
When we discuss fashion, we speak of names like Giorgio Armani, Gianni Versace, Kenneth Cole, LizClaiborne, or Tommy Hilfiger. But in the month of April, the heavily anticipated 2010 North Technical Senior Fashion Show starring fresh youthful names and styles like ZebraGaga, Purple Rain, and Painted Concoctions was the talk of the town. These new creative signatures and influential trends took center stage as the Fashion Design program seniors put on North Technical’s first ever fashion show. With all seats along the runway taken and a standing room only crowd starting to gather, anticipation for this first time event was definitely high. The show was dominated by two major fashion trends. The Underground Couture designers introduced a series of elegant designs meant for those uniquely special occasions. The Fashion Misfits designers launched a series of innovate and creatively expressive fashions for communicating ones mood and individuality. Aubriea Townsley opened the event as the main master of ceremonies, while Briante Wells coordinated the execution and timing of the show. Although some of the designers also doubled as runway models, many of the models were selected months in advance so as to be properly fitted for this event. In the end, the first Senior Fashion Show was a smashing success as 17 student designers created almost fifty outfits that were showcased on this exciting occasion. The Fashion Design program, headed by Ms. Andee Champion, is only in its second year here at North Technical High school, but these seniors have no doubt set the bar high for other fashion designers who will follow. With television programs like Project Runway and America’s Top Model, interest in clothing, fashion designs and trends will not be going away any time soon, thus the new program will no doubt grow in popularity among prospective students in the years to come. Congratulations to the Ms. Champion, the student designers, and models on a successful 2010 fashion show program. Track Team is KPLR 11 Hardees Team of the Week
The North Technical High boys and girls track team, coached by Richard Sanders and Drew Huston, has been in existence for a very short period of time. But in the handful of years the program has developed into a consistent squad of state class runners that have made their mark in the Missouri High School Track & Field scene. Last year’s team saw the likes of Shakira Thomas, a 3-time All-State athlete and St. Louis Post-Dispatch high school scholar athlete. The boy’s 2009 team produced outstanding talent like Marquis White who excelled in last year’s MSHSAA Track and Field event, winning both the 100-meter dash (10.68) and the 200-meter dash (21.62) in Class 3. Now the new 2010 team is attracting some attention of its own. The track team was recently named the Hardees Team of the Week and was highlighted on KPLR 11 Sports Sunday Extra. Such recognition bestowed upon North Technical high would be impressive enough if the school were equipped with modern track and field facilities, but KPLR 11 Sports Sunday Extra noted how this is not the case for the Golden Eagles squad. A lack of track and field facilities has made the Eagle runners train on everything from concrete to grass, but even under such less than desirable training circumstances, the North Technical runners have made the best of it and turned it into success on the field. The hard work and dedication of these Golden Eagle athletes have been the reason that this once upstart fledgling track program has developed into a significant contender today. Congratulations to the 2010 North Technical track and field team, the KPLR 11 Hardees Sports Team of the Week. Watch the KPLR 11 broadcast by clicking the video link on the right. .
“Casting for Cancer” Trivia and Silent Auction Night
North Technical High School Health Sciences senior Danielle Crow is a familiar figure on the tech campus, and for good reason. For the past three years Danielle has been spearheading fundraising events that help kids with cancer at the Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. SSM Cardinal Glennon cares for children of all ages from Missouri, Illinois and around the world, providing free statewide service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Danielle’s first event of the fundraising year will begin this month with a “Casting for Cancer” Trivia & Silent Auction Night. This will take place at the Florissant JFK Community Center on April 17 at 6:30 pm. The Trivia & Silent Auction night will include a 50/50 drawing, mulligans, raffles, and baskets for all ages. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door for $20 each. Last year’s Trivia & Silent Auction was attended by over a hundred people including friends, family, the community, and a number of North Technical staff members who made up two of the twelve teams which battled for trivia knowledge supremacy. The 2009 event raised approximately $5,000 to help kids with cancer at the Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, and Danielle hopes this year’s event can do even better. Besides the Trivia & Silent Auction, Danielle also organizes a fishing tournament fundraiser at the Lake of the Ozarks during the summer. This year's tournament will be held on May 15. Danielle’s inspiration to help children with cancer came from her experience with a 3 year old cancer patient she met at Cardinal Glennon during a hospital stay nearly three years ago. After her experience, Danielle was determined to find ways in which she can help both young cancer patients and their families financially. The work of this remarkable young teen has not gone unnoticed. She has appeared in the newspapers and on television, promoting this cause she so passionately believes in. North Technical Student Scholarship Recipients
By Davina Reid Northtechnical.org April 5, 2010
North Tech is pleased to salute all of our seniors who have worked so hard to reach their destined goal of graduation. In particular, there are some students who have made achievements not shared by many others. These students have not only been exemplary students academically, but they have set the goal of attending college. Additionally, they have been admitted to the college of their choice and have been offered scholarships to do so. The total scholarships they have been offered are from varying colleges and is summed over four years. The amounts are current and do not include scholarships from private sources; but only include those offered from the colleges/universities. This listing of scholarship recipients will be updated as more students receive awards. Please contact Ms. Davina Reid upon receiving a new scholarship offer. Congratulations to all our scholarship recipients!

University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) How were you able to obtain the scholarships you have been offered? The scholarship I obtained was an automatic scholarship and I received it by making good enough grades to have the required GPA. What words of advice would you give underclassmen who are interested in going to college and/or getting a scholarship offer? I just want to let them know to be on their best behavior starting the first year of high school because in the end, it will affect them. Also, take scholarships seriously and apply for as many as possible because college is very expensive.
